Toni & Vince complete Level 1 & 2 ASI SUP Instructor Course

‘Dreams are achievable!’ Today we embarked on the last day of our intense 4 day @asi_academy SUP course in St Ives with @ocean.sports . Both Vince & I completed our water rescue, Level 1 & now Level 2! This opens up big doors for Ebb & Flo in terms of what we can safely and professionally teach people and where we can go. We have big small business plans in our minds and this is a huge step in the right direction for us. A direction that will grow organically. We can not wait to put together more intense & technical programmes for people. Stoked is an understatement!
We have worked and trained hard and are reaping what we sow. We both feel so positive & can’t wait to spread the good vibes 🤙🏻

Inspiration behind the ‘Selene’ design.

This design is a tribute to the bond between the oceans and the moon.

Selene in Greek mythology is the goddess of the moon described as the eye of the night. Selene is depicted wearing a crescent moon crown hence the design of this piece.

As the goddess of the moon, Selene was the patron of the feminine. She was believed to have the power to ease childbirth and inspire love. Selene also was believed to have the power to mask reality and pierce illusion.

Selene is also said to awaken intuition and spark psychic visions. She is often considered to be the patron of solutions, which often come to people in dreams when the subconscious mind has a chance to process information that has not been consciously acknowledged.

I used a larimar stone in this design to represent the bond between the moon and the oceans. The gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun govern the tides causing a continuous ebb and flow of the oceans and Larimar is one of the cardinal water element stones.

Larimar is said to be a wonderful stone to introduce into your life if you are trying to harness the powers of water. Water is the element that rules our emotions meaning it is a great stone to use for anxiety.

Water is central to the Ebb and Flo experience. Without the moon we wouldn’t have the tides and without the tides we wouldn’t have the core element to Ebb & Flo.

World Ocean Day

This Friday is World Ocean Day. An important day on our calendar!

The purpose of world ocean day is to devote a day where we observe, honour and pledge to continue to protect and conserve our oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources including oxygen, climate regulation, food & medicine. It’s also an opportunity to take personal and community action.

This year we pledge to wear blue on Friday and continue to look after the water and beaches wherever we go. We will be celebrating by holding a demo education workshop for a small selection of children and we pledge to educate and inspire children & adults when and where we can for as long as we can. We can’t survive without our oceans and we personally need the sea, for us it’s like air.

We have strength in numbers so let’s rally up and start making changes to help protect our amazing oceans 💙

Plastic Free Schools

And so it’s begun!

In the previous blog we said we would keep you updated on the progress of our environmental action.
Firstly Toni has met with the headmaster at Signhills academy and the school has submitted an application for the Ocean Emergency kit.
This is an exclusive batch of 25 school beach clean boxes that will be awarded to schools across the UK. We will find out in the first week of February whether we have been selected or not.

Secondly Toni has introduced the plastic free schools campaign to Signhills academy and they are willing to work towards the plastic free schools status. The beginning of that will involve the introduction of a plastic recycling policy within the school which will be in collaboration with Ebb & Flo. Mr Carr (Signhills head) has already ordered a plastic recycling box for the school and has agreed for Toni to host various assembly’s; with the schools support, across the age groups when she receives the information from SAS.

We have received a lot of initial interest from local primary schools and we hope this will continue and expand into infant and senior schools. When there are more advancements we will report back.

Environmental action

We want to keep you connected and up to date with the progress of our environmental work and this is what we have achieved so far.

We’ve recently announced on our social media that Toni is now a regional rep for surfers against sewage (SAS) for Cleethorpes.
“Regional reps act as the voices of SAS in their communities these inspired individuals lead beach cleans, conduct education talks, connect with local councils and their local Member of Parliament, highlight regional issues and promote SAS’s national campaigns and initiatives. They enrage, motivate and empower their communities to do more.” (Quote from SAS site).

Ebb & Flo has had an SAS beach clean box since it opened in August 2017. This was delegated to us by Jez our other local SAS rep, as the shop is on the seafront. Since Toni has become an SAS rep we should also be receiving another beach clean box, which will be full of more goodies and gadgets to support local beach cleans.

In addition to that, Toni has a meeting with the headmaster of a local school with regards to the SAS plastic free schools campaign and the application of the ocean plastic emergency kits. We plan to introduce the campaign to all schools in or area which has already been well received from some parents and teachers. Toni has also pledged to deliver the SAS ‘Ocean Camp’ programme. We will keep you up to date with the progress when we know more. Furthermore we plan to introduce the SAS plastic free coastlines campaign locally. We will be working along side Jez our other East coast rep for Cleethorpes and again will keep you posted on the progress.

We are also proud to announce that we now have a 2 minute beach clean (2MBC) board, the first one in Cleethorpes.
Toni started a crowd funder to gather the costs towards the board in November 2017. The local community came together and we managed to raise the funds within 2 days! The local support has been incredible and so far; thanks to the employees who have used Ebb & Flo, we have received beach cleaning equipment donations from Conoco and Cristal Global. In addition to that we are awaiting a further equipment donation and a cash donation towards beach cleaning events. Toni also plans to extend the line of 2MBC boards along the seafront, this is ongoing.

Toni has been working and researching tirelessly to integrate environmental education into Ebb & Flo. SUCCESS!!
The most important part of introducing an educational element to Ebb & Flo was to ensure that it wouldn’t be typical or mundane.
Instead hands on, integrative, kinesthetic and most of all fun!
We went to a starboard demo day as an R&D trip in October 2017. After Toni had chance to demo her dream board (Starboard Allstar) we were offered freebies which included mini cheddar’s, can o water and a starboard brochure. It was in the brochure Toni discovered SUP kids. A programme designed for children aged 5-12 years which integrates SUP with water safety and environmental awareness.
After a little research and corresponding with Linzi the founder we decided to take the plunge to become the 1st SUP kids school in England. We are excited to announce that this will launch ready for the season in 2018.

Vince has been in correspondence with our local council. These guys have been more that receptive and supportive to our recommendations and plans on environmentalism so far. Last year in a meeting with Jez and Toni the waste and refuse department of our council offered to collect any rubbish post beach cleans and also offered to provide bin bags for free if we need them. Vince noticed that the information on our council website wasn’t very clear or concise with regards to plastic recycling. Vince contacted our councils waste and refuse manager to discuss revising the site to provide more information on this e.g plastic types; 1-7, the forms they come in and what the council will accept. The council have agreed to look into this. In addition our local council are keen to figure out ways to network and work collaboratively with Ebb & Flo on recycling education. We have a plan for this and promise again to update you with the progress.

As if that wasn’t enough! Last year Vince came across a project called Precious Plastic, which aims to try and boost plastic recycling worldwide. We thought this would fit in perfectly with the education programmes we intend to deliver and so Vince has decided to build a precious plastic container. Just so you guys are aware, Vince is a mechanical engineer by trade but also has bags of experience in project management. He is taking the lead with this.
So far Vince has managed to source a container which was donated for free by a local business called Axholme Brewery.
In addition we are well on the way to building the shredder which is the first machine to go in the container. We plan to integrate this into our SUP kids and SAS programs. As ever we will keep you posted on the progress
Visit their website for more info.

Finally!! (deep breaths) We are also pleased to reveal that Vince has kicked off the refill scheme in Cleethorpes and Grimsby. Riverhead Coffee were officially the first business to action this with no questions asked. Vince came across the scheme after watching a TED talk by Natalie Fee who is the founding director of City to Sea, a non-profit organisation running campaigns to prevent marine plastic pollution at source. Refill is a national, practical tap water campaign that aims to make refilling your bottle as easy, convenient and cheap as possible. But also encourages the reduction of single use plastic water bottles. We are still trying to encourage other businesses to subscribe to this campaign. Anyone can do it by downloading the app and registering as a refill station.
Please visit and for more info.

We feel like 2018 has already been hugely productive on the environment front. We can’t wait to see what happens throughout the year. We will try to keep updates flowing as often as we can. Until then
