5 Things I Loved in October

5 Things I Loved in October

October always feels like a deep breath out. The air turns crisp, the trees shift into gold and copper tones, and there’s a slower rhythm that feels grounding after summer’s intensity. It’s the month where I find myself craving warmth, calm, and simple rituals that bring me back to centre.

Here are five things that have brought me joy, comfort, and reflection this month.

A Forager’s Dream: Ladybower & Derwent Edge Circular

Autumn hiking is one of my favourite ways to reconnect, and this walk was pure magic. The Ladybower and Derwent Edge Circular, was alive with colour, amber leaves, mossy trails, and more mushrooms than I’ve ever seen in one place. A forager’s dream!

There’s something about being surrounded by all that quiet abundance that makes you slow down. I came home muddy, cold, and completely at peace, the best kind of tired.

Listening & Learning: Diary of a CEO

I’ve been diving into more long-form podcasts again while working, and this episode of Diary of a CEO really stood out:

“Is Not Believing in God Doing More Harm Than Good?" It’s a 3-hour conversation between a philosopher, a psychiatrist, and a professor of religion and Christianity, and such a fascinating mix of viewpoints. I love listening to open, honest discussions that explore purpose and belief from different angles. It’s not about agreeing with everything; it’s about being curious.

Nourishment in a Bowl: Homemade Chicken Ramen

This time of year always calls for broths, stews, and everything warm and soothing. Ramen is one of my go-tos, it’s like everything your body and nervous system need in one bowl.

I tried this recipe recently, and it was delicious, hearty, balanced, and nourishing. The kind of meal that makes you feel instantly calmer, spoonful by spoonful.

Returning to Routine: Supplements, Yoga & Pilates

After a long break from the gym, I’ve been easing back into movement that feels good for both body and mind, yoga and pilates have been my reset buttons.

I’ve been going to my local gym but the Down Dog app, which I always recommend for home practice is great tool. It’s so easy to tailor each session to your energy levels or schedule, and I find it helps me reconnect when life feels hectic.

I’ve also started back with my morning supplement routine:

That combo gives me a 50g+ protein breakfast (usually in overnight oats) that sets me up for the day. It’s simple, nourishing, and consistent, and I’m finally feeling the difference again.

Sitting with Myself (and Learning from the Silence)

The last few weeks have been a bit of an emotional whirlwind. I’ve felt stressed, overthinking everything, where I’m going, what I should be doing, and whether I’m doing enough.

I realised part of that came from struggling to connect with others in the way I needed. So instead, I had to learn to sit with myself, literally talk out loud to the universe and find comfort there. It probably looked ridiculous to an outsider, but somehow it helped.

Still, I’ve learned there’s a balance to be found. We all need connection, and not being able to share what’s heavy with others can hurt. But there’s also something quietly empowering about learning to be your own reassurance when no one else can give it.

“You’ll learn to rest in your own company when you stop searching for someone to make you feel understood.” - Sylvester McNutt III

That quote has stayed with me all month.

Wherever October finds you, I hope you’re finding small ways to slow down, in good food, fresh air, or simply being gentle with yourself.
