There’s always been something about Norse mythology that has sparked my curiosity, the stories, the symbols, and the way the Vikings lived in such close alignment with nature and the seasons. I’ve long been fascinated by Norse runes, completely immersing myself in the culture and their meanings. My connection with Viking runes has stayed with me for years.
Runes are more than an ancient alphabet. Each one carries its own power and story. Traditionally carved into wood, stone, or metal, rune symbols were used as guides, protectors, and reminders of the natural forces around us. They’re not just relics of history, they’re timeless, meaningful symbols that still resonate today.
What’s the Meaning of the Uruz Rune?
One of my favourite runes is Uruz, a symbol of strength, resilience, and vitality.
Uruz is connected to the aurochs, a powerful wild ox that once roamed across Europe. For the Vikings, this animal represented raw vitality, endurance, and untamed energy. Wearing this rune as a piece of rune jewellery was a way to draw on its qualities, courage, determination, and the resilience to keep moving forward.
For me personally, Uruz became a touchstone during a difficult chapter in my life. During my divorce, I kept returning to this symbol as a reminder of my own strength when I felt emotionally overwhelmed. That’s why I love working with rune symbols, they carry wisdom from the past but can still speak to the challenges we face in our lives today.
Designing the Uruz Rune Necklace
When creating the Uruz Rune Necklace, I wanted it to feel authentic, like something you might discover in an old treasure hoard of Viking jewellery.
I began by working with silver clay, shaping discs and hand-etching the rune into each one. Once dried, I fired them in the kiln, added a jump ring, and then used lost wax casting in recycled sterling silver to bring the final piece to life.
The texture is molten and rustic, deliberately imperfect, just how I imagine a rune would look if it had been unearthed from the ground after centuries. This weathered feel was important to me; I wanted the pendant to carry the same raw energy that Viking runes have always symbolised.
Strength in Nature
Uruz is a rune of endurance, and I see that reflected everywhere in nature.
The strength of an oak tree standing tall through storms. The way the seasons shift, winter into spring, darkness into light, always finding balance. Nature teaches us that resilience is not about avoiding difficulty, but about growing through it.
That’s the essence of the Uruz rune: a reminder that we, too, can draw on that same strength and keep moving forward.
A Talisman of Resilience
The Uruz Rune Necklace is more than just a pendant. It’s a piece of rune jewellery designed as a talisman, a symbol to carry with you daily, offering focus, reassurance, and inner strength. For me, it’s a grounding reminder. For you, it might represent something entirely personal. But my hope is the same: that when you wear it, you feel uplifted, empowered, and connected to your own resilience.
Final Thoughts
The Uruz rune is one of the most powerful Viking rune symbols, embodying raw energy, endurance, and health. For me, it’s a reminder that strength isn’t always loud, sometimes it’s quiet resilience, the ability to keep going when life feels uncertain.
Whether you’re drawn to its Norse mythology, its connection to the natural world, or simply the beauty of rune jewellery, Uruz offers an everlasting message: stand tall, move forward, and trust your own inner strength.
