There’s something awe like about looking up at the night sky. For centuries, travellers and explorers have used the stars as their compass, with the North Star as their guide, constant, steady, always pointing north. For me, the symbolism of the North Star has always resonated deeply, not only as someone who loves stargazing, but as someone who’s had to find their own way in life and in business, often relying on intuition to guide me forward.
That’s where the inspiration for my North Star Pendant began: a talisman for guidance, a symbol of trust, and a reminder that even when the path feels unclear, we already hold the compass within us.
What Does the North Star Symbolise?
The North Star has long been seen as a beacon of hope, a fixed point in the sky to help navigate uncharted waters and journeys through the unknown. For me, it represents courage and alignment, the ability to tune into your inner compass and follow your path, even if others can’t see it.
This pendant was designed as an ode to intuition: following the quiet pull of what feels right, trusting yourself to step into the unknown, and remembering that guidance is always there if you pause to look.
Sapphire’s Meaning & Connection
If you’ve ever wondered, what does wearing a sapphire mean? the answer is rooted in centuries of symbolism. Traditionally, sapphire has been associated with wisdom, resilience, and truth. It was once worn by royalty and clergy as a stone of loyalty and integrity, believed to protect its wearer from dishonesty or harm.
For me, sapphire is a stone of clarity. Its deep blue colour, like the night sky or the sea at its deepest point, feels steady, grounding, and full of quiet strength. Worn as jewellery, sapphire encourages us to return to our truth, to focus on what really matters, and to carry that wisdom with us in everyday life.
If you’d like to explore sapphire’s history and symbolism in more depth, I’ve written a full September Birthstone Journal Entry dedicated to it.
The Making Process
The design began as a hand-carved wax disc, where I etched the North Star with simple tools and left intentional file marks in the surface. I’ve always loved rustic textures, they feel like reminders of adventure, of ancient talismans dug up from the earth, weathered yet wise.
From that original wax, I created some casts in Delft clay before moving to the lost wax casting method for consistency. Each pendant is still hand-finished, ensuring every piece retains that raw, characterful texture that makes it unique.
The sapphire is set using a flush-setting technique, a skill I taught myself and have come to love. It allows the gem to sit seamlessly within the silver or gold, as though it’s part of the star itself. I source my sapphires ethically through AE Ward & Son, a trusted supplier committed to conflict-free stones.
Every pendant is made with recycled sterling silver or 9ct gold, in line with my commitment to creating jewellery that honours both story and sustainability.
A Personal Anchor
When I wear my North Star necklace, I’m reminded to stay centred. Running my own business has required more self-trust than anything I’ve done before. There are times when the path feels cloudy, but this piece is my quiet nudge to follow my instincts, to look inward for direction instead of outward for validation.
Over time, I’ve seen this meaning resonate with others too. Customers have gifted this pendant for 18th birthdays, 40ths, and 50ths, as symbols of guidance and encouragement at milestone moments. For some, it’s been chosen as a piece to honour a fresh chapter or to remind someone they already have the strength they need to find their way.
Meaning for the Wearer
This isn’t just a pendant, it’s a talisman for trust and resilience. Worn daily, it can act as a touchstone when you feel at a crossroads or need a reminder of your own clarity. Paired with sapphire, it carries a double layer of symbolism: the guiding star and the wisdom of truth.
Whether self-gifted or given to someone you love, the North Star with sapphire is a piece that holds space for both adventure and stillness. It encourages you to move forward with courage, to stay aligned with your own compass, and to honour the journey you’re on.
Final Thoughts
For me, this design is about more than jewellery. It’s about connection: to the stars, to intuition, and to the stories we carry. The North Star Pendant with Sapphire feels like a reminder that even when things feel uncertain, you are never truly lost. Like the star in the night sky, guidance is always there, sometimes you just need to pause and notice it.
